    Once upon a time, there wasn't such a need for background checks. Now that technology enables businesses to screen their potential employees, companies can save a bundle of money and heartache. Background checks were created to weed out crooks and criminals prior to hiring. It's become an increasingly popular procedure that precedes employment for most jobs.

    What kind of companies do background checks? You'd be surprised (and if you have something to hide - alarmed) at the amount of professions that do background checks. Large corporations, government jobs, financial institutions, educational facilities, security positions, and law enforcement facilities all utilize background checks.

    A background check might sound like a frightening process, but it's actually quite simple. Your employer might perform a background check by asking you about your previous references, and a list of any criminal offense -misdemeanor or felony - that you may have.

    Essentially, your background check is a verification process. Your employer will check all of the information you provided for accuracy. The results of your background check largely depend on your honesty.

  • Perform digital fingerprinting
  • Don't feel offended if a company requests a background check. It may just be a company policy. Feel flattered, if anything. After all, you'll be working with hard-working professionals once you're background check is finalized.

    It's important to feel safe in your work environment. Take sexual harassment in the work-place, for example. If you're a woman, wouldn't you feel safer in an environment that performs background checks? What about educational facilities? Would you feel safe sending your children to a school that didn't perform background checks? Of course not! Background checks are intended to keep people safe and prevent unacceptable incidents.

    Unfortunately, the world is made up of all different individuals. While a background check might reveal an offense in someone's past, this doesn't mean that they're automatically disqualified from achieving a desired position.

    Nevertheless, a background check will help a company decide what's best for them. A multi-billion dollar company is most likely not going to hire a guy who did time for embezzlement. Nor will a school hire a registered sex offender to instruct 3rd grade physical education. That's just the way it goes! If anything, background checks should be embraced by both employee and employer. While a background check might be a temporary inconvenience, it may award you the employment position that you've always desired.
